ASA: Don’t Make Fun of Jesus 2006-01-12
An Ireland- based betting company has received a harsh slap on the risk from the Advertising Standards Authority for a poster that features Jesus gambling.
The poster featured a recreation of Leonardo da Vinci's painting "The Last Supper," with Jesus and his apostles sitting around a betting table. The poster’s headline reads, “There's a place for fun and games.”
The ASA told the company not to re-run the advertisement because it might be offensive to practicing Christians. "The representation of the Last Supper as a casino, with the familiar Christian imagery replaced with items used for gambling, could cause serious offence,” the regulatory agency maintained.
The advertising group responded by saying that they had conducted trial tests among devout Christians, who gave the advertisement positive feedback.
The betting company has gotten into this sort of trouble before. Last year, they created a great deal of controversy by taking bets on who would be the next Pope.
