Dog Racing Not as Exciting As it Used To Be. 2005-06-14
Greyhound Park, originally closed nine years ago has demanded its reopening. Waterloo, Iowa’s Greyhound Park is now demanding, at the hands of state gambling regulators to open it up for business. Supports of the gaming operation have worked for this to become a reality once again. The owner of the track, National Cattle Congress, was denied a license for a riverboat casino, but now word on the dog park was mentioned.
As it seems The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission has other interests, they are looking elsewhere for investment. Recently they approved a casino license to the Isle of Capri’s Casinos, allowing them to build a $118 million compound near the Waterloo water park, still in operation.
Dave Nagle, an Attorney for the track, agrees that dog racing is a good addition to the gaming operations of Iowa. However the only profitable parts of this are the multiple betting features, and simulcasts from other race tracks. Since the track is not in the current plans to build slot machines, there is little interest.
At this time, dog racing is not the big excitement to the gaming industry, as slots are, but that may change. In the mean time there is not indication that the park will be opened for business, but that will be a battle Greyhound Park will struggle to defeat. Until then, the park will just have to be closed for its tenth year.
