Rooney's £700,000 Debt Settled in Full 2006-04-17
After shocking the world with reports of £700,000 in gambling debts, Wayne Rooney's football agent has announced that after a week of talks with the Manchester United and England striker's bookmaker, all debts are settled.
Rooney has allegedly run up the massive debt between September last year and February by gambling on dogs, horses and football with Stephen Smith, an associate of Michael Owen, Rooney's England striking partner.
A statement released by Smith's betting company, Goldchip, has confirmed that the outstanding debts have been completely resolved as a result of the talks.
Just a week ago, claims began circulating about the footballer's gambling debts, along with allegations that Rooney was in collaboration with an England gambling ring that included Owen, Frank Lampard, John Terry and Rio Ferdinand. Reportedly, the group had been betting on football matches that they weren't personally involved in.
As the group's wagers grew to a more serious scale, Owen introduced the teammates to Smith's bookmaking operation. Bets were placed with Smith by telephone and text message, though Rooney never met the man who ran his betting account and he was unsure as to the extent of his gambling debts.
Rumours of the footballers' gambling debts set of warnings of footballers falling into an epidemic of gambling addiction.
