Grand Casinos Sees Its Last Days. 2005-09-22
In the wake of Katrina and the discussion of rebuilding, when and how much it all will cost, others say level the ground before re-growth can begin. The Gulf Coast saw more floating casinos then they did land based, but for one floating casino, it made its way to land, unexpectedly. The Grand Casino not only took its last bow, but made its exit with a bang.
The Grand Casino, one the tortured buildings hit by Katrina, learned that it could not be salvaged, and this past week city planners knew that. By mid-week demolition crews came in and blew up, what was left over from The Grand Casino. The casino has been blocking U.S. Highway 90 near Gulfport ever since Hurricane Katrina brought it afloat.
Three explosions brought the five-story structure to its knees, in a demolition provided by the Transportation Department. The agency says the blast will also allow work to begin on the highway. This reconstruction could possible be completed in 90 days if all starts now. At the moment traffic is being rerouted through Interstate 10.
