Tribes Thinking Outside of The Reservation. 2005-09-27
The Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma plan to build a casino hotel complex in Downtown Pueblo. It seems that they have chosen to build and "off-reservation" site for the location for their fourth casino. The tribes have been trying for sometime to do so and now they may have the opportunity now.
Tribal gaming has grown since 1988, when it became legal. Today there are over 400 U.S. tribal casinos. Originally, lawmakers thought that only small bingo halls and limited-stakes casinos were tribal domain. However since the evolution, tribal casinos became a $19 billion-a-year business.
Previous tribal casinos were only on reservation lands, but now they have interests in state casinos. The downtown Pueblo casino was requested by Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes to settle indigenous land claims. Currently, nine applications seeking approval for off-reservation casinos have been sent to the National Indian Gaming Commission. Three, as of this point have been approved.
