Football Gambling Site Puts Owner in Prison. 2005-09-29
The coordinator of an illegal online football gambling site in China has been sentenced. The man was sentenced to a two-and-a-half years in prison. He was tried and sentenced September 28th in Beijing No 1 Intermediate People's Court.
The man Gu Lianbao, 43, was additionally fined 30,000 Yuan or (3,700 US dollars) as part of the sentence handed down September 20. Had Gu not admitted his guilt and cooperated with prosecutors, he would have gotten a higher punishment. So some say he did the right thing here by cooperating.
According to court records, the bookie's website handled 600 million Yuan (74 million US dollars). It is also believed to be the largest online betting operation in Beijing. Police cracked down on online betting, last December. Gu was surfing through gambling websites at home in Beijing when police showed up.
The police seized about 150,000 Yuan or (18,500 US dollars)in cash, a bank deposit book with a balance of 210,000 Yuan or (25,900 US dollars) and a bank card worth 60,000 Yuan or (7,400 US dollars). Gu acted as the banker for the website from June to December last year. He did this all through an agent for a Taiwan-based gambling company.
Gu was unable to count how many people had entrusted him, the court recalled. The judgment confirmed the original ruling by the Beijing Xicheng District People's Court, which took place last month. This now is the final judgment, according to Chinese law.
