Police arrested seven in the Philippines for illegally operating the lotto. Superintendent Elpidio De Asis said they were arrested for accepting bets. They were using the government sanctioned lotto of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office but the bets went else where.
Those arrested got bets from bettors using small sheets of paper and the winning number depended on the results of the lotto. The operators were self- financed, and worked in small groups. Despite the uproar the word jueteng has been circling around this incident.
Some aren’t so sure since Puerto Princesa City has been jueteng-free for over 10 years. It was only recently that talk has occurred again. Of course no one is sure if that is connected to one another.
De Asis said the police would file charges against the seven caught. This is true for all, but one, a 70-year-old woman. She did not collect bets from anyone and was mistakenly arrested. |
