Last week police took what they call illegal gambling machines. They found them in a raid of two Gaffney businesses. The Cherokee County Sheriff's Department and the State Law Enforcement additionally took 70 computers and other related materials.
The raid took place after undercover agents played on machines and were paid for their winnings. They later charged Norman L. Childers, 58, operator of Gameland Bingo, and James Melvin Hicks, Jr., 43, operator of the Possum Corner, with running illegal gaming devices. Both were released on bond pending further investigation.
The state outlawed gambling machines five years ago. An order to destroy the machines has now been issued. Gambling via gambling machines is not legal, and soon will not become either. |
