Horses Want A Track In Penn. 2005-11-15
Public hearings held in Pennsylvania were based on two proposals to establish thoroughbred racetracks. These meetings took place at the beginning of this week. They set out to review an application on the issue of the racetracks.
The Pennsylvania State Horse Racing Commission set the meeting early on at the McKeesport Area School District administrative offices to further discuss this issue. They reviewed the application by 1935 Inc. to build a one-mile dirt track off Coulter Road in South Versailles. No decision on this matter has been announced, if there is been one out.
The track is being proposed by five members of the Biros family, as they would like to build it on 140 acres they own. This property is near a bend in the Youghiogheny River, perfect territory for the tracks. The track the Biros family envisions is modest as far as other thoroughbred tracks generally go.
A modest racetrack is in their minds for a stand capable of holding 1,800 customers, with a parking lot with space for 2,200 cars. The commission also had scheduled a public hearing on an application by Beaver County businessman Charles Betters, and was also able to hear that early Monday morning with the other concerns. They also want to build a racetrack in the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Hays on a bluff overlooking the Monongahela River. The out come of that meeting is also yet to be known.
