Police Officer Charged With Corruption. 2005-12-11
A state trooper has resigned after pleading guilty to illegal activity. His activity was taking part in a sports-gambling operation. The operation incidentally made multi-millions.
Trooper, Dennis Burgos, 40, pleaded guilty on Thursday. He stood before City Judge Jeffrey Merrill, and pleaded to the misdemeanor count of second-degree promoting gambling. His resignation came at a time, where he needed to do this most. He resigned in order to be given a reduced count.
Burgos has previously been placed on suspension, and this didn’t do any better for his record. By resigning he got a lower sentence instead of the felony charges he was facing in this crime. Burgos was not alone in charging. He was charged in May with 41 others in connection of the gambling operation headed by George Bedigian. Burgos before his arrest was with the force for 11 years.
There are still charges pending against Bedigian, 60. He is to be charged with two counts of felony first-degree promoting gambling and three counts of second-degree promoting gambling. Unfortunately, his sentence will not be reduced, as he doesn’t have the luxury of stepping down from an official city position.
