An online sports book has recently posted its odds on the World Cup 2006. Already the early predictions have equaled around £1 billion. So far the favorite is Brazil, followed by Argentina.
Brazil, the defending champion, is listed at 3-1, while Argentina is listed at 13-2. Another bookmaker claimed the odds of England are 13/2, because while people may want them in the tourney, no one really wants them to win, at least the bet makers don’t want them to.
Apparently the problem with Britain came because one bookmaker suffered from their previous wins on a long shot, and had to pay out big time. Since then, they changed the odds of Britain, since they suffered when they actually won in 1996. Apparently, Frankie Dettori hit them for £40 Million by winning all seven races at Ascot in September 1996. It is since then they are careful with Britain odds. They don’t mind getting them to the finals, but they don’t want them to win. |
